What are emotions?
The word emotion comes from the latin root emotere, which means “energy in motion”.
Emotions have the purpose of getting us in motion, for example to move us away from a desireless state, motivating us to act. They can also act as a survival mechanism.
There are no good or bad emotions, but only emotions we feel when a situation we expected to happen, does not happen; or when an unexpected situation happens. In other words, when our needs are either met or unmet. When our needs are not met, we feel frustration, disappointment, anger, sadness. When our needs are met, we feel safe, happy, satisfied, grateful, blessed.
As such, an emotion is neutral, (nor good nor bad, nor expanded, nor contracted). As soon as we “label” an emotion and “give it a meaning” which we call feeling; it becomes either expanded (positive) or contracted (negative).
This gives us the power to manage and navigate our emotions, by using our thoughts to create meaning to a situation, therefore creating a feeling (emotion).
